While traveling in Haiti, Dr. Paul Farmer discovered the plight of rural Haitians and founded Partners in Health to provide medical services for the poor. Today, Partners in Health has spread to Peru, Mexico, Guatemala, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, and Malawi. The central Haitian branch of Partners in Health, Zamni Lasante, provides basic medical services, HIV/AIDS treatment, and social programs to serve the community. Zamni Lasante is unusual in that community health workers bring care directly to the homes of patients.
Even before the four storms that recently hit Haiti, it was nearly impossible for poor families to afford the costs of sending their children to school. With our help, Partners In Health intends to provide financial assistance for families of HIV-positive patients at the clinic, allowing 2,000 children to attend school. If these children attend school, the cycle of poverty can be broken. Children can learn crucial skills like reading and writing that they will need to secure employment. Most importantly, children also gain hope for a better future.
