Health class offers students a coherent vision of what us means to be health literate. The course provides information about pertinent ideas, issues and concepts related to achieving good health. Students will practice and develop skills essential to the development of health literacy-communicating, advocating, reasoning, and investigating.

Topics focus on the dimensions of personal health and wellness - physical, emotional, intellectual, social, environmental, and spiritual. students explore issues related to substance use and abuse, anger management, media literacy, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy, abortion, adoption, parenting, mental health, stress, depression, suicide, death and bereavement, values and moral development, nutrition and disordered eating.

Understanding, many topics are potentially controversial. Students have numerous opportunities to express personal thoughts and ideas in an atmosphere of mutual cooperation and respect. Personal and family values and belief systems should be considered when developing opinions and making choices that promote a healthful lifestyle. Students are encouraged to develop the skill necessary to advocate for self and others, to identify and access health resources, and to maintain a support network.

Open communication with parents is extremely important in a class of this nature. Please contact me at any time during the semester if you have quetions or concerns about your child or the curriculum.
